One Day at a Time
I am one of those people that when given a choice would choose to go with the flow, rather than fight the current. We have pretty loose plans, that may or may not come to fruition this year but we are taking it one day at a time. But if it isn’t this year then it will be the next. Ideally we assume that winter will be our best weather window to make the passage down the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway from Ft. Loudon Lake in Farragut TN down to Mobile AL. So that will be our first plan of action. I started looking at maps the other day, counting how many bridges we will be going under. To be honest, I’m not real sure what kind of research I need to start doing but i just started learning celestial navigation.
Once we are in the Gulf of Mexico we will fine tune our sailing skills. And when I say fine tune, I really mean learn the basics. I’m sure that one day before we leave, we will put the sails on and test her out. We will know what we are supposed to be doing, but the reality is that East Tennessee Lakes are nowhere near the gusty seas of the Gulf. Only when we get her to the Gulf will we be able to see what real power Ragnarok harnesses beneath her curves. We will start slow, find a good home base and take it one day at a time. Then see where we can get two days at a time. Find what works and what doesn’t. I’m not opposed to working a bit more while we still linger around Southern Florida.
Then one day we will know that the time has come to push a little further south. And so the journey will continue. One day at a time.
Of course, you must make a trip by car southward to leave your heart (Bryson) with you mother before your journey by boat. I like you are patient and not in a rush. That is safest.
You might consider finding a club that races small boats. I find that’s a very good way to learn a bunch about sailing. Even though it would be on lakes, a lot of the principles are the same. Looking forward to following your travels to the seas and across them.
